Kawai Kanjiro (1890-1966)

Lidded box
Gosu, kaki and iron oxide glaze over buff stoneware
c. 1940
15 x 13.5 x 13.5 cm
Box signed and sealed by Kawai Kanjiro
Kawai achieved a fluid combination of distinctly colored glazes on this traditional Korean form. The gosu glaze bands around the middle show a wonderful weathered effect, while kaki and iron oxides play off one another with alluring indeterminacy. This box is at once a simple utilitarian object made in the Mingei tradition and a dazzling Rothko-like display of color.
