Ishikawa Shoun was Iizuka Rokansai's (1890-1959) first apprentice. The prestige of such a position he must have felt immensely--and the burden!
Shoun is best remembered for his large, open sculptural flower baskets made from single lengths of flattened bamboo. But he also made what Rokansai would have classified as 'formal' baskets, such as this one, with exquisite construction and detail.
