Ishikawa Shoun was Iizuka Rokansai's (1890-1959) first apprentice. One imagines the prestige of gaining such a position must have been immense--and the pressure!

Shoun is best remembered for his large, open sculptural flower baskets made from single lengths of flattened bamboo. But Shoun also made what Rokansai would have classified as 'formal' baskets, such as this one, which is the finest we have seen.
